Course overview

You develop the knowledge, skills and awareness to empower others to make an effective contribution to the leadership and management of your organisation. And the knowledge and ability to critically evaluate contemporary issues in business leadership and coaching.

Given the dynamic and disruptive nature of modern business, combined with time and resource pressures and the need to adopt a more inclusive and trusting style of leadership, this course is aims to develop:

  • responsible leaders and coaches who are able to work with a diverse range of teams, in a variety of cultural contexts
  • self-reflective practitioners with awareness of their self-identity and values
  • critical and independent thought as a basis for enhanced coaching practice and participatory learning
  • capacity to act as an effective coach, including acting as a consultant to colleagues
  • capacity to evaluate perspectives, policies and performances at individual and organisational or community level.

You are equipped with the skills to be effective when leading a workforce in a complex, dynamic and increasingly global organisational environment. You apply theory to everyday situations in order to consult on, manage and lead effectively on a range of projects, issues and initiatives related to leading and coaching in business organisations.

How you learn

The course emphasises putting knowledge into action, allowing you to be aware of the role of business in society. This course is experimental, you learn with and through your peers to develop solutions to real-world leadership and coaching challenges within organisations. Use of learning technologies has a major role to play within the course allowing you to be engaged outside of the physical classroom and to be exposed to the latest developments in leadership. A research-informed approach includes professional and applied research, delivered by a vast network of business professionals who engage with the course through guest lectures and projects.

How you are assessed

You are assessed in a range of methods, including case study analysis, presentations, self-diagnostic assessments, reflective reports and a research proposal and associated dissertation.

Career opportunities

Graduates move into general or senior management/leadership roles, internal consultant/project leadership roles or into external consultancy.

This course is aimed at those students who have already identified a preference for studying the concepts, theory and practice of leadership and coaching and those who seek a distinctive postgraduate title within the diverse field of leadership and coaching. It is appropriate for those students who wish to pursue a career in industry, commerce, the public sector, or the voluntary sector, including those wishing to become independent leadership coaches. Therefore, graduates from this course may find work across a range of roles within general management or business and will also be equipped for enterprise, starting their own business and eventually employing their own staff.

Modules

You look at coaching models and frameworks, and styles of facilitation, enhancing your knowledge through exploring the philosophical and conceptual foundations of coaching practice by engaging with current research in the field. You explore reflections upon personal attitudes, beliefs and values in order to understand personal working styles to develop coaching skills. And consider a range of coaching interventions, as well as providing critical analysis of the various ethical and professional issues that can arise in coaching relationships.

Applicants are normally expected to have at least a 2.2 UK honours degree, or equivalent experience. Those without a formal academic qualification but with appropriate work experience and professional training will also be considered.
