Programme description

This programme seeks to provide you with in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of the: international legal institutions; rules and principles of the international economic system; key legal and policy issues arising from the globalisation of the world economy.

Combining detailed technical legal analysis with an engagement with history and political economy, it will; help you to place the current chapter of globalisation in its larger context, and to understand where it might be heading.

The programme structure is designed to ensure that you gain a thorough knowledge and critical understanding of three core branches of international economic law the compulsory courses: international trade law; international investment law; international development law.

You can also choose a tailored selection of option courses, depending on your personal interests and future career plans.

This programme is suitable for professionally qualified lawyers wishing to practise international law professionally, whether in law firms or at the bar, as legal advisers in foreign ministries, other government departments, international organisations or NGOs.

Modules

The dissertation is an extended piece of scholarship in which a student is expected to formulate and sustain a substantive piece of research. The student is expected to engage critically and analytically with the literature in the field, building upon relevant concepts and theory covered in the taught element of the degree and deploying a range of primary and secondary sources, comparative and bibliographic skills. Each student will be allocated a research supervisor in the second semester.

Entry requirements

A minimum UK 2:1 honours degree from a UK university, or its international equivalent, in law. We will also consider candidates with a degree in a related discipline which includes relevant prior study.
