Course Summary

Who is this programme for?

This programme is aimed at high-calibre graduates in medicine involved in the management of clinical emergencies in children.

It is ideal for trainees in paediatrics and emergency medicine, and also highly relevant for anaesthetists who wish to develop skills in paediatric anaesthesia or paediatric intensive care.

It will also help primary care practitioners who work in remote and rural areas without paediatric support.

What will I study?

In the Diploma year you also have the opportunity to choose courses in paediatric critical care medicine. This is designed to bridge the gap between resuscitation in the Emergency Department and admission to the Paediatric Critical Care Unit, including high dependency and intensive care.

The programme is designed to give you the educational background you need to manage medical emergencies in children, throughout the world.

The final year of the programme can be tailored to your circumstances and career goals.

Career opportunities

This programme has been designed to help you achieve a successful career in paediatric emergency medicine with a high quality qualification and the latest understanding and knowledge.

Online learning

Our online learning technology is fully interactive, award-winning and enables you to communicate with our highly qualified teaching staff from the comfort of your own home or workplace.

As an online student, not only will you have access to Edinburgh’s excellent resources, but you will also become part of a supportive online community, bringing together students and tutors from around the world.

Modules

This programme aims to ensure that practitioners have a sound anatomical and physiological basis for treatment of acute illness and injury in children, with particular focus on the recognition, assessment and management of pain. The programme aims to promote an understanding of the principles of child protection, and the legal aspects of caring for the sick or injured child.
