Course Summary

The programme will enable you to make evidence based assessments to facilitate clinical decision-making. It will serve to enhance your level of professional confidence and leadership skills through individual study, group project work, teamwork and organisational skills. This in turn may equip you to consider alternate employment settings such as allied healthcare leadership or teaching posts. Subject Specific Knowledge: Oral condition management including periodontal diseases, dentition and other oral conditions; Principles of health behaviour change; Oral health promotion and prevention; Clinical governance; Research design and conduct.


This degree will enhance your knowledge and understanding of Dental Hygiene which can be applied in a clinical setting. The completion of the dissertation in year 3 will provide students with research and management skills enabling them to consider alternate employment pathways.


Studying on this MSc programme will enable students to make evidence based assessments and apply them to clinical decision making. It will develop their ability to analyse or synthesise ideas and to organise complex materials in a lucid manner. It will enhance their professional confidence, leadership skills, encourage teamwork and management skills.

Entry requirements

All applicants must hold an approved dental hygiene qualification (diploma or bachelors) and be currently working as dental hygienist in practice with at least three years’ clinical experience post qualification.
