About this degree

Students will gain a critical understanding of the CYP IAPT model of service change, outcome monitoring, and fundamentals of evidence-based psychological therapies to common mental health problems in childhood and adolescence (anxiety, depression, and conduct problems). Students will also develop skills in Autism Spectrum Conditions/Learning Disabilities (ASCLD) Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents (IPT-A) or Under 5's, depending on the module choice.

Who this course is for

This programme is aimed at candidates who have an appropriate educational background, and preferably some experience with CAMHS, who wish to develop their skills for children and young people. However, each NHS Partnership will have individual person specifications depending on their needs.

What this course will give you

The programme is based and taught at the Anna Freud Centre, a national charity with a worldwide reputation. It is a centre of practice, research and learning, which offers treatment for distressed children and support and advice for parents, trains mental health professionals to understand children's emotional development, and carries out pioneering research into effective ways to help young people suffering emotional distress.

  • Family and Adolescent Psychotherapist, Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust

Careers data is taken from the ‘Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education’ survey undertaken by HESA looking at the destinations of UK and EU students in the 2013–2015 graduating cohorts six months after graduation.

Employability

CAMHS professionals will be well placed to become skilled and creative independent practitioners of their chosen speciality.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families and is part of a collaborative teaching process with Kings College London. It is taught by leading practitioners in the field, with learning being a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, clinical practice with on-going cases, and clinical supervision groups. Assessment is through essays, a clinical case log, case studies, oral presentations and reflective analysis.

Modules

This module aims to help practitioners to develop essential skills that are fundamental to the effective provision of the different evidence-based therapies that are taught as part of the CYP IAPT programme. Developmental psychopathology will be presented as a conceptual framework that is useful across different therapies to enable students to formulate the presenting problems of clients such that they are better able to plan interventions regardless of therapeutic approach. Students will be introduced to the various measures available within CYP IAPT, and will be shown how best to administer, score and interpret the measures in such a way as to enhance clinical practice. The policy frameworks and the evidence supporting increased participation of clients (whether children, young people, families, parents or carers) in service planning and delivery will be presented and students will take part in skills workshops aimed at increasing participation of, and collaboration with clients.
