Course info

Digital innovation is having a profound impact on the cultural sector, and experts are increasingly needed to work at the intersection of computing, digital technologies and the humanities. The Digital Humanities MA gives students both technical skills and critical understandings in order to address the challenges of our post-AI world. Students have in-depth contact with leading thinkers and industry professionals in order to work towards an industry placement and their future career. The MA in Digital Humanities is an interdisciplinary course designed for students who want to study how digital innovation is reshaping culture, research, and society. As technology continues to transform the ways we create, interpret, and engage with the humanities, this course equips students with both the technical expertise and the critical perspective necessary to thrive at the intersection of computing and cultural practice. The course offers a combination of hands-on training in digital tools and methods—such as data analysis, web development, digitisation, and AI literacy—alongside rigorous engagement with key theoretical and ethical debates surrounding technology’s role in society. Students are encouraged to examine how digital platforms, algorithms, and infrastructures influence knowledge production, cultural heritage, and public discourse. This integration of academic and practical experience prepares graduates for a variety of careers, including digital strategy, cultural data analysis, digital archiving, user experience design, and research in both academic and commercial settings. The course is suitable for students with an undergraduate degree in a wide variety of subjects. It allows students with a background in the humanities to acquire the necessary skills in digital technologies and enables those with a technical background to understand the implications of transforming humanities sources into data. It is as suitable for those seeking continuous professional development (CPD) as for those who hope to gain a postgraduate degree and enter the job market or to pursue further study. This programme is also available on a modular (flexible) basis, with a duration of 5 calendar years.
