The Mathematics Education MA is for teachers, tutors and others interested in how mathematics is taught and learnt at all levels of education. The course gives students the opportunity to explore issues in mathematics teaching, to consider the theoretical underpinnings, and to carry out a rigorous study of mathematical learning. The Mathematics Education MA is for teachers, tutors and others interested in how mathematics is taught and learnt at all levels of education. You explore issues in mathematics teaching, considering the theoretical underpinnings of the field, and you carry out a rigorous independent study of mathematical learning, developing appropriate research skills and a high degree of familiarity with systems in England. The course aims to stimulate a passion for engaging with mathematics education, and to equip you with the knowledge and skills to contribute strongly to the field, either through deep engagement with practice and policy or through subsequent doctoral level research. Beyond the field, you develop a critical and analytical approach to reading and writing, use appropriate technological tools, and become independent thinkers and effective communicators. As a stand-alone course, the Mathematics Education MA at UCL is one of very few courses in England offering you the opportunity to complete your full degree in mathematics education, where you start the journey of developing as an expert in the field. The Mathematics Education MA is suited to teachers and other professionals working in - or interested in working in - all phases and sectors of education (from early years to adult education and in mainstream, alternative and special provision) who are interested in mathematics education, and others with a strong background in mathematics and education. This programme is also available on a modular (flexible) basis, with a duration of 5 calendar years.
