Course Summary

The Biology PGCE prepares you to develop the professional knowledge and skills you need to teach all aspects of the science curriculum to pupils in the 11-16 range. You are also supported to develop your knowledge and understanding of teaching Biology at A Level. We are committed to creative and interactive approaches to teaching science to promote engagement and learning. Students on the Biology PGCE will develop a critical understanding of current debates and issues relating to science education, and will be guided and supported in understanding how to help young people learn Science, particularly Biology. Our approach to Intensive Teaching and Practice (ITAP) is proudly subject-specific. Our ITAP sequences are embedded through the Biology PGCE and will give you the opportunity to develop your practice and build your confidence in pivotal areas of Biology-specific pedagogy. Closely linking theory and practice, and enabling you to observe, deconstruct, plan, practise and progress in specific areas of teaching, these learning sequences focus on: Establishing positive learning environments. How to use analogies and models in Science education to develop and evaluate conceptual understanding in Science. Teaching Science skills and ideas through practical work. Fieldwork in Science learning.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a lower second-class UK Bachelors degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in Biology or a Biology-related subject. The content of any related degree must consist of a minimum of 50% Biology modules.
