Course info

The Bartlett School of Planning is a world-leading centre for research, impact and innovation. We offer cutting edge theory-driven, practice-oriented and policy-relevant teaching and learning across all our programmes. Our MPhil/PhD students benefit from close supervision and creative collaborations, interacting with leading urban planning academics and practitioners through innovative teaching methods. The MPhil/PhD in Planning Studies is an advanced level doctoral programme geared to interdisciplinary postgraduates interested in pursuing a career in planning or related fields in policy, research and/or teaching. The course is individually directed and motivated, driven by the scholarly research interests and project development of the applicant which is supported by a supervisory panel usually consisting of two members of academic staff. The final product is a thesis of 100,000 words and an oral examination assessed by a small panel of experts in the chosen field of study. Applicants should be prepared to undertake independent and original research design and implementation, with varying degrees of supervisory input over an extended period of continuous and intensive study. Applicants are not required to have an academic background in the built environment, though this may be beneficial. Additional training may be requested as a condition of entry to the programme. Our programme is designed graduates of any discipline who wish to make a career in planning or in related fields in built environment-relevant teaching or research.
