UCL’s Social Development Practice MSc equips you to critically engage with social justice, inclusion and rights-based development in the Global South. You’ll explore how diverse groups access resources, recognition and power in urban contexts—developing the analytical tools and practical skills needed to support equitable change. Our course combines theory, case studies and fieldwork to deepen your understanding of people-centred development. Development practice has shifted beyond economic growth to focus on human wellbeing, social justice and inclusion. Yet putting these values into practice is challenging, particularly in contexts marked by inequality, shifting power dynamics and shrinking public protections. The Social Development Practice MSc responds to this by equipping you with the tools to critically engage with processes of social change, collective mobilisation and rights-based development. It also prepares you for your future career as a social development practitioner, able to navigate social complexity and support equitable outcomes. This interdisciplinary, applied degree focuses on inequality in urban contexts across the Global South. It embeds people-centred development and critical analysis of social policy, building the insight and skills needed to support meaningful change. Through case studies, social theory and practical learning, you explore how diverse and marginalised groups access rights, resources and recognition—and how social injustice takes shape within and across places. Key themes include gender, race, disability, citizenship, collective action and informal planning, with critical reflection on your role in shaping interventions. The Social Development Practice MSc is shaped by a diverse international community of students and staff with backgrounds in fields such as sociology, anthropology, psychology, international studies, economics, geography, history and communication studies. We welcome applications from professionals and recent graduates who want to deepen their understanding of social development and build skills in critical analysis, project management and stakeholder engagement. This course provides grounded training in both theory and practice, making it suitable for those already working in development as well as those entering the field with a strong interest in action-oriented approaches to urban justice and inclusion. This programme is also available on a modular (flexible) basis, with a duration of 5 calendar years.
