Course Summary

The Master of Studies (MSt) in Applied Criminology and Police Management (Senior Leader Master’s Degree Apprenticeship) has the following aims:

  • To build the knowledge, skills and behaviours that senior leaders in policing need to serve the public interest in maintaining safety and justice under the rule of law.
  • To promote the professional development of senior leader apprentices by combining on-the-job training with academic learning and research.
  • To introduce senior leaders in policing to the most current and enduring knowledge about targeting, testing and tracking the use of police resources to achieve specific objectives.
  • To develop skills necessary to locate, interpret, conduct and analyze research on issues in policing services.
  • To develop skills of course members in communicating their analyses, conclusions, and proposals based on research, both orally and in writing.
  • To equip course members for lifelong learning in applying current research in applied criminology and police management to improve the performance of their organisations.

Learning resources include an instructional team that uniquely combines globally renowned academic scholars with highly accomplished English Chief Officers, as well as the Radzinowicz Library, one of the world’s leading collections on crime-related topics.

The [Senior Leader] Apprenticeship [course at Cambridge] is dependent on the finalisation and confirmation of a new Apprenticeship Standard by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education. This may result in the need to make changes to the advertised course specification. If changes to the advertised course are required, applicants/accepted candidates and their employers will be notified. They will have the opportunity to review any required course changes and will be free to withdraw their application without prejudice if the changes do not meet their needs, and their employer will be entitled to a full refund of any application or tuition fees paid. The candidate and their employer must notify the University of their intention to withdraw from the course within 10 working days of receipt of notification of any required changes.

The Master of Studies (MSt) in Applied Criminology and Police Management has the following aims:

  • To introduce senior police officers and suitably qualified others to some of the most important research and theory in applied criminology and policing management
  • develop the skills necessary to locate, analyse and apply research to police operational strategies and tactics
  • develop the conceptual knowledge and understanding necessary to evaluate research methods and findings
  • develop capabilities in communicating the results of their research, conclusions and proposals in both written and oral form.

Entry requirements

Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK II.i Honours Degree. Students are also required to supply evidence of obtaining a Regulated Qualifications Framework Level 2 Mathematics and English (i.e. GSCE grades A*-C) if completed prior to course start. If unable to provide, please state this during the application process.
