Doctor of Education

Candidates for the EdD will be experienced professionals working in educational contexts including schools, higher education institutions and health care settings. Applicants will include teachers, school leaders, university staff and those working in related fields (for example, policy, advice and support or management), who are committed to extending their understanding and improving practice in their educational domain through researching and theorising policy and practice. The EdD is designed to facilitate knowledge building through engagement with practitioners and policymakers. An important aspect of the work of the EdD Communities is a focus on strategies for maximising the impact of students’ research and dissemination of the outcomes.

There will be a programme of research methods training over the course of the programme. In order to ensure that the EdD is accessible to practitioners, sessions take place in twilight and Saturday workshops. Students will also attend specially tailored sessions within the wider EdD community, as well as one-to-one supervisions with an academic whose expert interests link with the area in which they are conducting their research. Throughout their studies, students are encouraged to play an active role in research seminars, engage in opportunities for acquiring transferable skills and to disseminate research findings to the wider educational domain.

Applicants for this course whose Master's is from another university should have achieved the equivalent of a UK Master's (merit). Students wishing to continue to the EdD or PhD from either the MPhil in Education or the Master of Education in the Faculty of Education are required to achieve a mark of 70 or higher for their MPhil or MEd thesis.

Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK Masters (Merit). Applicants for this course whose Master's is from another university should have achieved the equivalent of a UK Master's (merit).
