Course info

The Department offers a one-year full-time MPhil programme, by research, leading to the Master of Philosophy in Biological Science (Biochemistry). This is also available as a part-time option, taking two years. Currently, we do not run a Masters course by instruction, involving classes and examinations. The aim of the MPhil degree is to give candidates grounding in modern biochemical and biomedical research techniques, practical experience of a year-long, full-time experimental research project, and skills in scientific communication through both oral presentations and writing.Learning OutcomesThe successful completion of the highly regarded MPhil in Biochemistry by research prepares the graduate for a wide range of future career opportunities ranging from PhD studies to industrial research and ancillary work such as dealing with intellectual property and patents. The graduate will have attained a high level of expertise in biochemical methodology and research strategy.AssessmentThesisThe thesis is a standalone piece of writing of fewer than 20,000 words describing the student's research. It is written as a formal scientific document and usually contains an introduction, a materials and methods chapter, one or more results chapters and a closing discussion. The examination is a viva voce examination by two examiners, who examine both on the content of the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls. The scheme of examination for the course of study in Biological Science for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of a thesis, of not more than 20,000 words in length, exclusive of tables, footnotes, bibliography, and appendices, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Biology.
