Course Summary

The Sun, our closest star, is the geometrical and gravitational centre of our Solar System - it provides all the light, heat and energy that is required for life here on Earth.

The influence of the Sun extends over a vast region, called the Heliosphere, which includes the solar system planets. Due to the Sun being so near (150 million km, which in astronomical terms is tiny!) we can observe it in immense detail. It is also very important to understand how this celestial object interacts with our planet. The MPhil is between a taught or research masters and a PhD. You will investigate and evaluate an approved topic. You'll also prove an understanding of research methods appropriate to your chosen field. An MPhil is awarded on successful completion of a programme of supervised research. It is assessed via a thesis and a viva voce (oral examination). Throughout your MPhil journey, you will be supported by a programme of research training. This will enable you to develop transferable skills for your future career path. We offer alternative start dates for your research degree, commencing in September, January and March for maximum flexibility.
