Course Summary

If you are an experienced dentist, this part-time course will give you the skills to use conscious sedation safely and effectively.

You will gain the knowledge required for safe sedation according to national standards. You will also have the opportunity for supervised clinical experience at our University Dental Clinic in Preston.

On successful completion of this course, you'll be able to offer conscious sedation as a sedation-operator. You will feel confident in your ability to do so. You will be offered mentoring during and following completion of the course to support your transition to practise independently.

This course complies with national guidelines, including IACSD, Dental Faculties of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons and Royal College of Anaesthetists.

Modules

You'll gain the knowledge and skills to practise safe and effective conscious sedation. You'll cover the sciences underpinning clinical procedures. You'll also be introduced to a range of techniques and perform under the supervision of an experienced clinical tutor.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants must be registered with the General Dental Council as a Dental Surgeon
  • A satisfactory Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland) and Occupational Health check is required for this course
  • Be registered with a defence union
  • Have indemnity insurance cover at an appropriate level for the practice of Conscious Sedation
  • Hold a current certificate of immunisation against communicable disease (Hepatitis B)
