Course info

Our dynamic part-time MA in Modern and Contemporary Writing offers a unique blend of creativity and critical study. On this course, you’ll immerse yourself in contemporary literature where it’s being created, exploring how modernism continues to thrive in today’s writing.

At UEA, you’ll join a world-class community where expert scholars in 20th- and 21st-century literature collaborate closely with Europe’s most prestigious department of Creative Writing, and the British Centre for Literary Translation. This is the same vibrant environment that nurtured literary giants like Kazuo Ishiguro, Angela Carter, W.G. Sebald, Ian McEwan, and Malcolm Bradbury, alongside groundbreaking critics such as Lorna Sage and Clive Scott. And here, the new field of the ‘creative-critical’ is being pioneered.

You’ll study the classics of modernism and explore the distinctive modes of contemporary writing. You can also take modules in creative writing, and modules bridging creative writing and criticism. We lead the discipline in the emerging discipline of the ‘creative-critical’. You can also take modules in neighbouring disciplines such as gender studies, race studies, film, and translation.

As a student on this course, you’ll join a vibrant community of MA and PhD students, published authors, and recent graduates shaping the future of literature. Set in Norwich – a UNESCO City of Literature and home to the National Centre for Writing – you’ll be surrounded by festivals, author events, and publishing opportunities, making this the perfect place to immerse yourself in the world of contemporary writing.
