Course Summary

The Norwich Bioscience Institutes are a collection of world-leading research institutes that explore a diverse range of fundamental and strategic biological sciences in a multi- and inter-disciplinary research environment. The institutes are: - the John Innes Centre - the Quadram Institute Bioscience - the Earlham Institute - The Sainsbury Laboratory The global challenges of the 21st century are enormous and advances in the biosciences, including plant science, computational biology, microbiology, biological chemistry, harnessing food for health and controlling food-related diseases, offer real opportunities to address these. Research interests at the institutes include: • Evolutionary biology and population genomics • Food, nutrition and health • Food safety: microbes in the food chain and food authenticity • Genomics, computational and systems biology • Gut biology, health, and microbiome • Molecular microbiology and metagenomics of complex microbial communities • Plant and crop growth, development and yield • Plant and microbial metabolism and biological chemistry • Plant bioactives and foods for health • Plant pathogens and innate immunity • Synthetic biology and biotechnology Working closely with a research supervisor gives you the support to carry out your own independent research and make your own mark. We have a wealth of remarkable supervisors, but how do you know which team will be right for you? We suggest you look at the institutes' websites, check out some research supervisors and read up on some of their publications. We recommend that you identify at least one member of staff who might be your supervisor and that you contact them, to express your interest and discuss your research proposal. You will need to submit a research proposal of no more than 1500 words with your application.
