In this course, students gain both accountancy skills and a deeper understanding of economics within the context of modern finance. Jointly delivered by the Department of Economics and Essex Business School, the programme equips graduates with the academic and business skills required for a career in the financial sector. Students develop in‑depth knowledge of the use of accounting information in organisational control and decision‑making, as well as the use of financial statements and the challenges related to measurement and disclosure. The course also explores topics such as optimisation theory, the structure of economic arguments, and the role of equilibrium. Upon completion of the master’s degree, graduates may choose to further extend their knowledge through a research degree, with many Essex graduates continuing their studies at the university. Alternatively, the course also prepares students for employment, as recent surveys indicate that higher degree graduates are more likely to secure professional or managerial‑level positions.
