Careers

The UK has one of the world’s strongest and most developed data analytics sectors, predicted to grow by 177% over the next 5 years and demand for qualified professionals continues to grow. The UK’s commitment to expansion of renewable energy is likely to mean a high level of investment in the sector in the next decade. The adoption of the UK’s microgeneration tariff in 2009, the Green Deal in 2013, the phased adoption of the Renewable Heat Incentive from 2011-2014 and introduction of Contracts for Difference in 2014, suggests continued strong support for rapid expansion of renewable energy in the UK.

Modules

Recent advances in science and computing technology has resulted in an explosion of available data, in fields as diverse as biology, climate, engineering, finance and medicine. This has led to the development of new data analytic methodologies, aimed at meeting the challenges associated with processing and understanding ?Big Data?. In this problem-solving oriented module, you will keep abreast of state-of-the-art data science tools and techniques. Through practical hands-on learning using locally curated and global open sourced data and sophisticated scientific computing software, you will develop skills and techniques needed to convert complex data sets into useful information. To foster understanding, effective communication is key. Therefore students will engage with contemporary data science literature, and present their findings in reports, posters, and through digital media to engage with the lay public and with specialists in their chosen science and technology area.
