Your employability skills will be enhanced throughout the programme, finishing with a Business Project module using real data to address a real organisational problem.High achieving students have the opportunity to apply for the Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Management (QTEM) programme which includes an internship and semester abroad.
In this module you will develop the skills necessary to communicate analytical results to senior managers. You will learn the consulting skills necessary to understand business problems and develop solutions based upon analytics. The module will develop your skills in communicating information about data visually and verbally. You will learn how to use visualisation tools in R and commercial software such as Tableau.
You will undertake an independent research or consultancy project based upon a real company problem with real data. The report will consist of 10,000 words and relevant analytical tables and figures. The project will allow you to display the skills you have learned during the taught part of the programme. These skills include: project planning, analytics, visual representation and writing. Each student will be supported throughout the project by a business analytics academic.
In this module you will learn the basics of database design and how to manage data. This will include topics such as data cleaning, retrieval and manipulation. You will develop a theoretical understanding and practical experience of SQL, relational databases, webcrawling and parsing of data.
In this module you will learn fundamental programming skills that enable you to search and sort data. You will be introduced to programming in Python and R, and will learn how to develop and run programmes in Jupyter Notebooks. You will learn key programming principles and will practice applying them to real business problems. These skills will form the basis of your ability to address business problems using data.
This module will cover a range of mathematical methods that are used in business analytics, including key principles in statistics, econometrics, probability and algebra. These will form the foundation of analytical methods that you will explore and apply in later modules.
This module will introduce the key ideas and current topics in business analytics. It will act as a foundation for the programme and will introduce you to key concepts and ideas as well as offer a preview of the modules in term 2. It will highlight the importance of data to organisations and how it can be used to improve firm performance in relation to competitors, customers, employees and processes. The module will introduce you to how data and analytic methods can be used to support an organisation?s overall strategy. The module will also consider ethical, regulatory and security issues associated with data and its use within a business environment.
