Course Summary

This programme will provide the advancing healthcare professional wishing to study at Masters level the opportunity to learn the theory and practice of advanced skills in the management of complex lymphoedema, including the Casley-Smith technique of Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

WHY THIS PROGRAMME

  • The first course will provide students with the necessary skills and the theory underpinning these and explore the evidence base. The second course will facilitate the application of these skills in more complex situations and in the context of delivering and managing a service. t will facilitate further development of skills in analysing and synthesising clinical findings and evidence for decision-making at an advanced level.
  • The programme combines workplace learning with part-time attendance and on-line learning to explore and contextualise contemporary issues and the latest research evidence.

Modules

Managing Complex Lymphoedema
This course will provide student with the opportunity to learn the theory and practice of advanced skills in the management of complex lymphoedema including the Casley-Smith technique of Manual Lymphatic Drainage. This is course 3 of a four course graduate diploma programme but may be accessed directly if pre-requisites are met. The course provides the student with an opportunity to learn the advanced skills and knowledge required to manage patients with complex lymphoedema. Learning of theory and skills is consolidated with workplace and on-line learning to develop the skills of an advancing practitioner in this field.

Entry requirements

Professional qualification of either Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional (physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Radiography) or Medical Practitioner. Successful completion of a recognized lymphoedema course to the level equivalent to the University of Glasgow Graduate Certificate in Lymphoedema Practice. Preferably a minimum of 2 years clinical experience post qualifying. Currently working with people with lymphoedema/chronic oedema OR have confirmed pre-arranged access to such patients for the period of the course. A good first degree or equivalent (evidence of academic work within the past 5 years).
