Course info

Data science has the potential to change the way we’ll live in the future by solving or offering insights into many of the largest problems of today. On this dynamic course, you’ll learn advanced coding skills to develop state-of-the-art machine learning approaches for AI products and services. You’ll then use these technologies to solve real-world problems relevant to your existing knowledge and expertise. You’ll create intelligent models which can predict future outcomes based on past data, generate artwork, or give you incredible insight into hard-to-find connections within your datasets.Working with data from industries at the forefront of data science today, like biomedicine, finance and social media, you’ll gain a deep understanding of data flows within organisations and systems, and how huge amounts of data can be engineered to produce knowledge.

Modules

Modules (Level 7)
Applied Data Analysis Techniques for Business (CT7203)

This module covers the ways in which data analysis tools and techniques can be applied to specific business use-cases and areas. The intention is to give students a toolbox of appropriate techniques and how they may be applied to business problems which fit particular contexts. This may be in the context of existing businesses, or offering consultancy services to particular businesses.

Data Analysis and Visualisation Principles (CT7202)

Expands upon the principles of python programming, introducing data analysis and visualisation tools such as matplotlib, seaborn, numpy, and pandas. Covers common database tools and data file types, and teaches students how to import and export data, for later manipulation.

Dissertation (CT7206)

The Dissertation is the single largest piece of assessed work undertaken by the student and is designed to synthesize the range of knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course. The Dissertation provides students with an opportunity to conduct a sustained and intensive investigation into one project area, drawing on programme-related cognitive and practical skills and to present their findings in a formal manner in accordance with academic conventions.

Ethical Data Science (CT7204)

This module covers the ethical issues associated with data science, and machine learning techniques. From both the point of view of artificial intelligence safety research, as well as the importance of avoiding bias in data. We will also discuss intellectual property and sourcing ethical data.

Machine Learning and Optimisation (CT7205)

This module covers the techniques behind machine learning, and optimisation, in the context of data science applications to real-world issues.

Python Notebooks and Scripting (CT7201)

This module teaches students about the principles of Python programming and how that relates to data science, i.e. the tools used in development, the basics of the language data structures and syntax, and how to handle I/O in python, as well as a brief overview of other programming languages common in the scene.

Research Methods for Computing (CT7094)

This module aims to give students an in-depth study in the practical and theoretical skills required to read, understand, and undertake academic research in the computing-related disciplines. This includes planning and preparing a detailed proposal for a project suitable for a Master's dissertation. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are studied and practical data collection and analysis is also included. Research paradigms and research ethics for research with or without human participants are outlined and explored.
