Course info

This Master’s in Biotechnology covers key fields such as gene therapy, drug design, genomics, proteomics, genetic engineering for plants, animals and micro-organisms, and bioinformatics. This multidisciplinary MSc in Biotechnology course brings together aspects of chemistry, biology and cell biology to cover knowledge across several key fields. You'll gain critical and analytical skills and learn to solve problems, establishing the practical and professional skills you need for employment or further study. The course helps you develop a creative attitude to the development and manufacture of biotechnology products. As well as subject-specific knowledge, you'll also gain critical awareness of the advances at the forefront of biotechnology. By exploring these biological systems, you'll learn to develop the technology, tools and products used in research, industry and agriculture. The course also includes a research project. If you wish, you can earn an endorsement in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology by taking your project in a pharmaceutical science or a related area.

Modules

Modules (Year 1)

In addition to the core modules, students will also study one optional module.

Academic English for Postgraduates (Science) - Core

The aim of the module is to develop students’ academic communicative competencies in line with the educational conventions of UK HEIs and to facilitate transition into that culture. In addition, it aims to support international postgraduate students in developing their understanding of the demands of studying at postgraduate level in a UK university and their ability to use English for academic purposes in a Postgraduate UK environment. This online course further aims to develop international postgraduate students’ English language knowledge, as well as their academic writing skills. It will also allow students to gain a better understanding of research skills and the need to use clear and consistent systems of sourcing, paraphrasing and referencing as well as an ability to put such systems into practice.

In addition to the core modules, students will also study one optional module.

Applied Molecular Biology (30 credits) - Core

To provide in-depth knowledge of the human genome, genetic coding and the interactions of informational macromolecules such as nucleic acids and proteins. Explanations of the current range of techniques for analysing and manipulating these molecules will be provided allowing the students to interpret genetic changes and predict their outcome. It will be clarified how this knowledge can be exploited in a medical or commercial research environment to manipulate the phenotype of select cells or organisms and produce useful biological materials.

In addition to the core modules, students will also study one optional module.

Bioinformatics (30 credits) - Core

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the concept of bioinformatics and enable them to access and investigate genomic, transcriptomics, and proteomic databases. It will also help students to understand predicted protein structure and drug interaction and explore the techniques involved in aligning DNA and protein sequences. This module will also acquaint students with the ability to analyse and differentiate between different data sets using web-based platforms and software.

In addition to the core modules, students will also study one optional module.

Biotechnology Research Projects (60 credits) - Core

To develop students with critical skills and capabilities that will enable them to make an innovative contribution to applied research within the broad discipline of science. To assess the candidate’s ability to work independently and as a part of a team in the pursuit of the analysis of a novel problem and develop skills necessary for self-managed and life-long learning (e.g. time management and organisation skills).

In addition to the core modules, students will also study one optional module.

Research Methods and Data management (30 credits) - Core

The aim of this module is to provide students with the advanced knowledge and skills in research designs to enable students to independently design studies in their chosen fields and pathways. It will provide knowledge in analytical techniques and relevant advanced skills in biostatistics and their practical applications and learn about research projects and their management including research governance and ethical considerations. Students will also appreciate the application of survey techniques learned for epidemiological surveillance and screening of different client groups in clinical and public health settings. It will provide a forum to enable students develop critical scientific reasoning and application of such reasoning in critical and peer reviews.
