Course Summary

The MSc Construction Project Management will teach you how to match design and production to the needs of the market for built space - an issue at the very core of the construction and property industries. You'll learn how to plan and control the allocation of resources and respond creatively to volatile economic conditions. Specific modules cover topics such as development economics and planning, applied project management, risk management, building integrated systems and technologies. Graduates of this Construction Project Management course will have a host of career options, including project management roles with property developers, construction contractors, local and central government, and regeneration agencies.

This course is aimed at cognate individuals from built environment and architectural background seeking management and leadership roles within the construction, property and surveying practices industry. It also designed for mid-career people preparing to make the transition into the construction and property industries.

Modules

The module explores the sometimes contentious interface between the development process and the government maintained planning system. Traditionally planning intervention has variously been justified on the public interest grounds of protecting amenity and the environment while encouraging a rational use of land in response to growth. However in recent years the rationale for planning has coalesced into promoting sustainable development, so that financially viable development proposals are also expected to provide some combination of social, economic and environmental benefit. Given that those taking the course are likely to pursue careers which involve promoting or managing development, the course will explore how these sometimes conflicting objectives can be realised.
