Course Summary

The Postgraduate/Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) prepares you to become a secondary school teacher of science, specialising in biology. You will focus on addressing the needs of pupils aged 11-16 and beyond, working with professionals from specialist science organisations such as the Royal Society of Biology. We also partner with the adventure learning charity Wide Horizons, who will support your training in the area of fieldwork, conservation and ecology. During your time with us, you will develop your teaching skills, learning how to address the needs of secondary school pupils at Key Stages 3 and 4. You will also develop your expertise, practical knowledge and theoretical understanding of science. You will emerge fully equipped to be formally assessed against the national standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Placements are a core element of teacher training which enable our trainees to put theory into practice in a supportive environment. We are extremely lucky to work with a wide range of partners across London, Essex and Kent to support our trainees. We work closely with trainees when deciding on placements to ensure that trainees get the best training possible whilst on our programmes. Our strong partnerships ensure our trainees are well supported and have outstanding experiences whilst training with us.

This module aims to enable trainees to: provide student teachers with an understanding of how to integrate the theory and practice of education; develop student teachers who are professionally committed to the education of all children; encourage student teachers to start to develop their own professional identity; develop an understanding of how to bring about effective learning in the specialist subject in a secondary school; and develop student teachers towards achieving the Teachers? Standards.
