Course Summary

About the course

A University of Hertfordshire research degree is an internationally recognised degree signifying high levels of achievement in research. It develops extensive subject expertise and independent research skills which are honed over an extended period, depending on the level of the award.

The topic of research will depend upon your specific interests and the expertise of available academic staff. You undertake an original research project for the duration of the degree, under the supervision and guidance of two or more academic members of staff. You are also supported by attendance at the University's generic training courses and our seminar series. For the duration of the degree, you are given opportunities to present your work at major conferences, subject to available funding for which applications for financial support would be required.

The degree is assessed on the final research output, in the form of a written thesis of up to 25,000 words, which is defended in a viva voce examination with an external examiner present.
