At its most fundamental, chemistry is the ‘art’ of transforming one molecule into another. Our highly versatile Chemistry MSc course has been designed to allow you to direct your studies to specialised areas of chemistry. The course places strong emphasis on practical chemistry, complemented with focus on current topics in chemistry research. This enables the principles and theories of chemistry to be applied within a laboratory setting to solve real-world challenges. You’ll engage with a wide range of chemistry-related subjects, ensuring that the course is highly interdisciplinary and contains expertise from a range of specialisms, including chemistry, food science and nutrition, physics, chemical biology and material science. You'll have the opportunity to be taught by experts across faculties, to gain the skills and knowledge to work in a multidisciplinary environment. You'll gain extensive hands-on practical experience within the laboratory by undertaking a practical skills module and by carrying out an independent original research project. Optional modules will give you the chance to build up specialist knowledge in areas that align with your interests and career aspirations. Advanced Practical, Professional and Research Skills for Chemists (30 credits) - Core

The aim of this module is to provide students with training in practical, analytical and transferable professional skills to prepare them for their research projects and future career development.

Advanced Topics in Chemistry (Coursework) (30 credits) - Core

On completion of the module, students will have an advanced level understanding of a wide range of chemistry to the most advanced level. They will be able to demonstrate their knowledge and recall of multiple areas simultaneously and be able to explain and solve unseen problems of an advanced nature. Ultimately the module will prepare them for postgraduate research either in academia or industry by providing the students with the core basis of advanced knowledge they will require. Through the continual assessment aspects of the module they will receive training in transferrable skills that will aid their future career.

Students will need to study optional modules.

Advanced Topics in Chemistry (Examined) (15 credits) - Core

On completion of the module, students will have an advanced level of understanding of a selection of current topics of chemistry. They will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of multiple areas simultaneously and be able to explain and solve unseen problems of an advanced nature. Ultimately, the module will prepare them for research either in academia or industry by providing the students with the core basis of advanced knowledge they will require.

Research Project for Chemistry-based MSc courses (60 credits) - Core

On completion of this module, students should: 1. have an appreciation of literature background to an important problem in their chosen field; 2. be able to formulate hypotheses to be tested experimentally; 3. keep an accurate, formal record of research performed; 4. be able to plan new experiments in the light of earlier results; 5. apply key methods in appropriate scientific technology for the investigation of important problems and/or develop new methodology; 6. be able to interpret experimental data and to develop new models on the basis of these experiments; 7. disseminate research results both orally, and as a written research paper, technical report or thesis format; 8. to develop generic transferable skills for personal development.
