That’s why governments worldwide are looking for environmental engineers to provide solutions in areas such as public health, air pollution, waste and water. Our Environmental Engineering and Project Management MSc will deliver the core foundations in environmental engineering, including key issues in water resources, solid waste and controlling emissions. You’ll also be trained in project management, equipping you with a professional skill set that can contribute to providing environmentally sound solutions and economically sustainable systems. You’ll study in the School of Civil Engineering which ranks highly globally and is actively involved in developing ‘internationally excellent’ research — much of which shapes the course. Advanced Wastewater Management (15 credits) - Core

This module aims to enable students to gain deeper insights into engineering processes and systems for wastewater management, including energy and resource recovery; and apply knowledge gained to a real-world problem culminating in the submission of a design coursework.

Circular Economy and Resource Recovery from Waste (15 credits) - Core

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the emerging theory and core practical aspects of engineering application of recovering of resources and value from waste, within the context of a circular economy.

Environmental Microbiology (15 credits) - Core

This module provides a practical introduction to the classification of microorganisms, their importance in a range of environments and the impact they can have on the environment and human health. It also provides an overview of key legislation for environmental protection and methods for assessing the impact on the environment.

Groundwater Pollution and Contaminated Land (15 credits) - Core

This module is about engineering responses to complex groundwater and soil pollution. The module has a particular focus on appropriate understanding of interactions between soils/groundwater/pollutants. It will also cover the link between engineering, earth science, environmental management and sustainable development.

Indoor and Urban Air Quality (15 credits) - Core

This module introduces sources, dispersion and health and environmental impacts of a range of airborne contaminants, including microorganisms, in the urban and indoor environments. Students will gain an understanding of the issues of poor air quality, the regulatory environment, approaches to analysing exposure and risk, and operational and engineering approaches to controlling and mitigating impacts.

MSc Dissertation (60 credits) - Core

The dissertation module will last for the duration of your MSc programme. The submission date will vary according to whether your programme begins in September or January.

Project and Asset Management (15 credits) - Core

The module aims to develop an understanding of the implications of whole life management concepts on infrastructure asset management. It also introduces and explores the most common project management concepts, tools and techniques. It focuses on the relationships between Capital Investment Delivery, Maintenance, Renewal and Disposal.

Solid Waste Management (15 credits) - Core

On completion of this module, students should be able to: understand the characteristics of municipal solid waste arising and key challenges relating to it; understand waste collection including recycling; understand the science and engineering aspects of landfill, mechanical-biological treatment and thermal treatment options; understand the operation and design of emission control systems for the various solid waste treatment options; understand the specific challenges for SWM relating to developing and low income countries; understand basic principles on how to obtain (sampling) and analyse (statistics) waste-related information; understand quality management for waste-derived products and how they fit in a circular economy.

Water Resources Management (15 credits) - Core

On completion of this module, students should be able to: present the principles of IWRM; present the system and practicalities of water resource management; to develop outline water management plans for typical rural and urban basins; to present principles of urban drainage and sustainable urban drainage.
