Course info

In addition to its central role in defence against infection, the immune system is now recognised for its importance in determining susceptibility and progression of other major diseases of global significance, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, cancer and musculoskeletal disease. Research into inflammation and immunity impacts significantly upon our understanding of the biology, pathology and routes to treatment of these seemingly diverse conditions. Our research encompasses molecular mechanisms of immunity and inflammation, translational studies and clinical trials. We study the molecules and cells of the immune system, viruses and viral infection and the role of immunity and inflammation in cancer, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular disease. Our goal is to use this knowledge to improve healthcare and a major part of our activity is to investigate strategies to manipulate inflammation and immunity to improve patient outcomes in cancer and musculoskeletal diseases.
