Course Summary

Course description

This postgraduate degree offers a broad range of modules that cover the key areas of psychology, including cognitive, social, developmental and biological psychology plus research methods. We also have a focus on applied psychology with a dedicated module designed to support you in your psychology career.

The course is offered part-time and on a distance learning basis, meaning you can study with us from anywhere at a time to suit you. You can combine achieving a qualification with work or family commitments. Support is provided through lively online discussion forums with your peers and the teaching team. Materials are presented in an interactive way designed to ensure engagement with each subject area.

A two-day residential Course Conference is held annually, consisting of workshops and study skills sessions.

Teaching and learning

On a distance learning course, you will study in your own time on a part-time basis, so you can combine achieving a qualification with work or family commitments.

Teaching is through specially prepared course materials and other directed reading. There are discussion boards on our virtual learning environment (Blackboard) which let you engage with tutors and other students; these also contribute to your assessment.

A range of assessments are used across the course including case studies, presentations (via Skype) and research reports.

Careers and employability

A postgraduate qualification is an investment in your future. There is no doubt that studying for a postgraduate qualification can help your career prospects - you will gain the deeper knowledge and high end skills and that will set you apart. Studying with us gives a clear signal to employers. It demonstrates that you have the spark, ambition and commitment to take your career to the next level. Your employer will also benefit directly from your newly acquired understanding and capabilities.

Modules

This module focuses on the processes through which we construct an understanding of ourselves and others around us, and how our thoughts, feelings and beliefs influence social behaviour. As part of this module, you will learn how we acquire and process information to build a social construction of the world around us, how we make attributions, develop attitudes and how these impact our emotions, sense of self and relations with others. This module also introduces you to group behaviour and dynamic functioning both within and between groups, such as social influence, conformity and obedience, leadership and trust, and how cross-cultural factors influence social behaviour. By exploring each of the topic areas, the modules aims to build upon your knowledge of ethical principles in applied research and practice, and to develop key skills in qualitative research.
