Course Summary

On successful completion of this three-year programme, you will be eligible to register as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Professional Register.

Midwives provide comprehensive care and support to birthing individuals, their partners, and their families. This includes antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care. Our midwifery programmes emphasise equality and diversity, ensuring a truly inclusive curriculum that recognises and values differences in the broadest sense. We are committed to making all our students feel valued and included.

The MSc Midwifery (pre-registration) programme is designed for graduates aiming to pursue a career in midwifery. This master's level course offers a strong foundation for clinical work and opens pathways into research, education, management, leadership, or consultancy roles.

Our Midwifery Curriculum is UNICEF Baby Friendly accredited, and we achieved the Gold Award status in February 2021, demonstrating our highest commitment to infant feeding education for student midwives.

You will:

  • Learn to practice autonomously, preparing for a career as a registered midwife.
  • Develop the skills to provide care throughout the pregnancy continuum.
  • Maintain a portfolio of personal and professional development (PDP).
  • Have placement options available.

This is for you if...

  • You are hardworking and committed.
  • You are prepared to work shifts.
  • You are compassionate and caring.
  • You want to make a real difference.
  • You are up for a challenge.
  • You can see yourself working with people from diverse backgrounds.

All about the course

This course meets the requirements for registration on the midwives' part of the NMC Professional Register. It is underpinned by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council pre-registration midwifery standards and provides a comprehensive experience of midwifery practice. Each year combines theoretical and practical modules, and you will maintain a portfolio of personal and professional development (PDP). The course also includes assessments of clinical skills and medicine management.

Midwifery practice proficiencies are assessed within clinical settings and recorded in an online document, the MORA (Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement). Academic modules follow the six domains of the NMC pre-registration standards, preparing you to achieve clinical competencies and progress from a novice to an accountable practitioner by the end of year three.

  • Year one:
    • Introduction to midwifery practice.
    • Basic clinical skills development.
  • Year two:
    • Advanced midwifery practice.
    • Increased clinical responsibilities.
  • Year three:
    • Autonomous practice.
    • Preparation for registration.
