Course Summary

Biomedical Engineering is a broad discipline covering all aspects of engineering related to medicine, in terms of the development of medical devices, and the human body, in terms of how we interact with devices and possible detrimental effects. In fact, the development of medical devices is one of the fastest growing fields of engineering. This programme provides an insight into the mechanics of the human body and introduces you to the challenges faced in the design, development and testing of medical implants and other devices. In particular, it focuses on orthopaedic biomechanics and issues related to the selection of materials and design issues as well as methods used to assess their performance. In the third year you will do an individual project, and in the fourth year you will participate in a group design project in which you will work with engineering students from different specialisms. For further details, including a range of options for industrial placements, see MEng Mechanical Engineering (H301) and Mechanical Engineering Placements.
