Course Summary

The MA International Relations helps you to understand and critically reflect on the global challenges of our times. We live in a world of poly-crises, from war and conflict to climate change and sustainability. Human rights are challenged on multiple occasions.In this MA, you will gain the skills and knowledge to help you negotiate some of these issues by:exploring the role of governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental agencies, private enterprises and international bodies in world politicsgaining a deeper understanding of specific regions in the world and how they impact on world politicslearning about the (in)securities of our time and the future of peace and human rights.Sussex has one of only four dedicated International Relations departments in the UK. You'll learn from leading International Relations scholars whose cutting-edge research informs their teaching. You'll systematically study world politics through a critical theoretical foundation.At the same time, we have your employability in mind. You'll build a portfolio of skills that will enable you to pursue a career globally from local and national governments to international organisations, from NGOs to transnational corporations.

Modules

This module provides you taking the programme with the opportunity to complete under expert supervision a dissertation on a topic of your choosing relevant to the course themes. The subject will be chosen in consultation with the Programme Convenor. You will embark on preparation of the dissertation following completion of the Research Methods and Professional Skills module and submission of a research outline. A desk-based or original empirical study will be undertaken, enabling you to pursue in-depth research on an aspect of international relations.

Entry requirements

You should normally have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above. Applicants with a lower second-class (2.2) degree classification will be considered on a case by case basis. Your qualification should preferably be in a social sciences or humanities subject; alternatively, you should have relevant professional experience or engagement.
