Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (Scotland)
Lanarkshire Campus
Full Time
Aug 2026
1 Year
This programme provides the formal teaching qualification required for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), equipping you with the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to build a career as a primary school teacher. You will study a wide range of subjects featured in the primary school curriculum, including English/Literacy, Health and Wellbeing, and Mathematics/Numeracy. The programme enables you to develop core skills in planning, teaching, assessment and evaluation strategies, classroom organisation, building relationships within the classroom, and understanding contemporary issues in Scottish education. You will gain practical experience through 18 weeks of school placements, which take place in at least two primary schools or education and childcare settings within local authorities in Scotland. Upon graduation, you will receive the formal teaching qualification required for provisional registration with the GTCS-a necessary step to enter the guaranteed one-year Teacher Induction Scheme. Most graduates go on to mainstream teaching roles in the UK or abroad, while others work in specialist educational areas such as supporting children with additional learning needs, adult training, museums, writing and publishing, health education, curriculum development, and social services.
