Our MSc in Communications and Information Engineering allows students to gain expertise in the fundamentals of communication systems and networks, as well as the protocols for transmitting large amounts of data reliably and effectively. You’ll cover developments in wireless network architectures and deployment (such as 4G/5G/6G communication systems) and have the opportunity to study advanced topics such as artificial intelligence and cyber security for communication systems in real-world settings. Cross-discipline options from the Department of Computer Science offer key insights into approaches for dealing with the explosion in data collected in modern society. You will also undertake an individual research project – an extensive experimental, theoretical, or computational study on a topic of your choice, guided by an academic supervisor. Previous project titles include: Machine learning for end-to-end design of wireless and optical communication systems; Cyber-physical system security in smart energy systems, robotics, and healthcare applications. Our research within the School of Engineering covers a wide range of expertise in communication systems, cyber-physical systems (smart grids, robotics, and healthcare) optical networks, internet-of-things, digital twins and applied artificial intelligence. After graduation you’ll be well equipped for employment opportunities in modern information and communication engineering, which is currently undergoing a revolution. Recent graduates from the course occupy positions in a variety of industries in the UK and worldwide, including core network provision, automotive communications, smart grids, logistics, software support and data communication equipment/services, as well as banking, oil and gas, and fashion. The course is also the perfect platform for progression to a PhD.
