The History (First World War) MA is the longest running course of its type in the U.K. It offers an exceptional opportunity to study the First World War with leading scholars of the conflict.

The First World War shaped the 20th Century and its legacy is still felt today. The conflict remains deeply controversial. This course will allow you to study the war from a variety of angles to develop your understanding of its causes, course and consequences. Primarily focussed on Britain and the British Empire at war, the MA considers the strategic, military and social aspects of the conflict.

What happens on the course?

This part-time course takes place on Saturdays at the University of Wolverhampton. In your first year the Saturday schools take place once a month from October to June. In your second year the Saturday schools take place once a month from October to April. The remainder of the course is spent researching and writing your dissertation.

Modules

The objective of this module is to introduce students to some of the key historical debates associated with politics and strategy in the First World War. At the end of the module students should be able critically to evaluate historians' contributions to these debates. Moreover, the module aims to provide the students with the methodological skills that they will need successfully to complete this Masters programme. Through a mixture of lectures, student-led presentations, and practical exercises, by the end of the module students should be equipped to handle the methodological and practical challenges they will encounter during their studies. In particular, students will be well versed in historiography, analysis and use of primary and secondary sources, using a library, and using the Internet as a research tool.

Full time fees: Non-Lab Based Fees: £15,950 per year, Lab Based Fees (FSE only) £16,450 and it is a guide for part time students. The fee mentioned is for 2024-25 academic year and there may be a slight increase in the fee for 2025-26 entry.

Entry requirements

You need a 2:2 or above in a relevant Honours Degree is desirable, but applicants with other qualifications and non-graduates will be considered on individual merits.
