This Masters degree explores selected key topics of the Second World War. It allows in-depth study in the history of military conflicts, societies and the Holocaust, including: strategy, diplomacy and politics; the Ostfront and German occupation policy in Eastern Europe; societies and total war; the Asia-Pacific War , the war in the West 1944/1945; and the Holocaust: historiography, sources and controversies.

At the culmination of the course, students undertake a piece of original research, a dissertation based on primary sources.

You will be taught by some of the leading Second World War and Holocaust historians in the UK, who have proven and respected research and publications records and reputations for excellence in teaching.

Modules

This module will acquaint students with a thorough understanding of the varying approaches of the Axis and Allied powers in the Second World War to the development and implementation of strategy. It will critically assess key aspects of coalition warfare, the development of strategic approaches to the prosecution of the war, and the the link between wartime politics and diplomacy in the formulation of grand strategy. The module will introduce students to a range of prmary sources and secondary historiographical issues and interpretations and further develop skills of critical anlaysis and interpretation. Students will discuss and debate these issues leading to a final essay.

Full time- Non-Lab Based Fees: £15,950, Lab Based Fees (FSE only) £16,450 and it is a guide for part time students. The fee mentioned is for 2024-25 academic year and there may be a slight increase in the fee for 2025-26 entry.

You need a Honours Degree with 2:2 or above is desirable, but applicants with other qualifications and non-graduates will be considered on individual merits.
