This course aims to meet the growing need within the built environment sector for professionals with a thorough understanding of the management of the construction process from inception to completion. This is a full-time only version of the MSc Construction Project Management course that aims to provide an industrial placement opportunity during Semester 3 (May to October). This extends the minimum learning period to 15 months.The MSc Construction Project Management course aims to meet the growing need within the built environment sector for professionals with a thorough understanding of the management of the construction process from inception to completion. The focus on following the process through inception, feasibility and planning of projects differentiates this course from operational construction management. As a student you will experience a combination of structured learning with problem-based scenarios and research that will develop your capabilities for critical thinking, argument, creativity and encourage your innovation all of which are brought into the practical decision making processes encountered in built environment projects.
The MSc Dissertation enables you to undertake an in-depth individual research project in an area directly linked to your subject area and interests. This will ensure that you undertake scholarly work that further develops an aspect of the taught material and thereby contributes to your personal development and training towards professional practice. This module evidences your transformation from undergraduate to master?s level achievement through the process and production of a recognised research output in your subject area.
This module will develop construction project skills, identify, review and analyse project management best practice guidelines and discuss aspects of planning and controlling projects. Evaluation of industry techniques and tools, using manual and computer methods for planning and control will be undertaken.
This module will comprise an issue of real-time relevance to the sector of the construction industry. The topic will be discussed and agreed between the module team and stakeholder representatives. The module will then be designed and delivered by subject experts engaged in contemporary research on current built environment topics.
One of the key challenges for successful delivery of a construction project is administering it in accordance with the terms of the contract used for it. This requires expertise on the standard forms of contracts available, ability to synthesise principles from them and related documents for application to problems often encountered on projects. The principal aim of this module is to develop these attributes in relation to the most commonly used forms of contracts.
Management of the operational construction project including the major processes together with the leadership and management issues that support the completion of successful projects.
By studying this module you will develop the personal and professional skills required to design and undertake research in your chosen subject area at post graduate level.
The strategic management of the business case for programmes and projects from the concept, design and definition stages through to implementation of the built or finished product. Strategic advice and management to and for the client including finance and investment.
This module will enable students to gain valuable industrial experience by undertaking a work placement. A portfolio will be used to gather records of the tasks undertaken and experienced gained.
