Course Summary

Art and Design is an exciting secondary school curriculum subject and incorporates a wide range of design disciplines including art, textiles, ceramics and photography. As a trainee you will learn how to teach Art and Design to pupils in the 11-16 age range within the secondary age phase, with additional primary and post-16 enhancements. You will learn how to develop skills, knowledge and understanding for teaching art and design through a combination of university-led and school-led training.Our Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Secondary Education provides a high standard of training for those preparing to take up a teaching post in the secondary school sector. The course complies with the statutory guidance from the Department for Education for initial teacher training courses.The PGCE in Secondary Education is specifically designed to ensure that those who are successful will be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) - the professional award required by all those who wish to teach in a maintained school.Full-time (1 year)

Modules

This module builds on your knowledge, skills and understanding that you have gained through prior experiences to support you development as a teacher. This year ? long module will enable you to enhance your skills as a critical, reflective practitioner in readiness for your NQT (Newly Qualified Teacher) year. This will require you to: engage with theories of teaching and learning across the themes of national policies and strategies in education, subject pedagogy, assessment within the framework of national target setting and the use of data, behaviour management and assessment for learning in the classroom; critically relate these theories to your strengths and areas for development as practitioner in the context of classroom and in the wider professional context(s). You will be required to demonstrate a deep knowledge and understanding of your practice; demonstrate, articulate, evaluate and critically reflect on your needs to enable you to continue to develop your professional identity as a teacher. Although a significant proportion of the training associated with this module can be delivered through university-based sessions, the major part will take place in the school-based environments, supported by school-based tutors and professional tutors. The taught sessions will be delivered through mixed subject groups beginning with a two day school experience.

Entry requirements

To hold a first degree of a United Kingdom higher education institution or equivalent qualification. For example Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of science (BSc) etc. or similar. They are sometimes known as 'undergraduate' or 'first' degrees, to have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade 4 (previously Grade C) in the GCSE examinations in English and Mathematics. We do NOT accept GCSE Short Courses OR GCSE Equivalent Tests from other institutions or organisations, Key Skills Level 2 or Functional Skills Level 2.
