Course Summary

Bioinformatics is where biology meets data science, using computational tools to unlock insights from complex biological data.

From genomics and imaging to environmental monitoring, this course trains you to transform raw data into meaningful discoveries.

At York, you’ll learn from leading researchers tackling global challenges in health and disease, sustainable food and fuel, and environmental change. Alongside scientific training, the course will develop your commercial awareness and entrepreneurial skills, helping you turn research into real-world impact.

Designed for bioscientists with little or no programming experience, the course begins with modules in Bioinformatics, Data Analysis and Programming, and Research Skills. You’ll then work on a collaborative group project, engage with York scientists in interactive research seminars, and finally complete an independent research project in a specialist area of bioinformatics.

Throughout, you’ll gain experience in data analysis, programming, communication, and project design, preparing you for a PhD with a computational focus or a career in biotechnology, healthcare, or environmental industries.
