Course Summary

This course aims to build on the skills you develop during the PGCert Health Economics for Health Care Professionals.

Mounting pressure on healthcare budgets worldwide has focused attention on how best to organise health care systems and the spending within them. The University of York distance learning courses in health economics allow you to gain a qualification without interrupting your career, and offer the flexibility to spread study over a period of years to suit your professional and personal circumstances.

Using the knowledge you have gained in our PGCert in Health Economics for Health Care Professionals, you will deepen your knowledge of health economics.

Course Content

In this course, you'll complete three modules to the value of 20 credits each. These will be combined with the modules you completed for your PGCert Health Economics for Health Care Professionals to make the 120 credits that you need to obtain the PGDip qualification. The PGDip will help you to develop your understanding and analytical skills in a range of areas which were studied at Postgraduate Certificate level including:

  • application of microeconomics and health economics to the analysis of health care systems
  • the role of experimental and observational study designs in the analysis of health economic data sets
  • a range of advanced methods to apply to the economic evaluation of health technologies.

The learning objectives aim to equip you with the necessary skills in health economics to progress your career within your current organisation and/or to change career direction, targeting jobs which combine health economics with the disciplines in which you are already qualified.


Upon successful completion of the module you should be able to: Explain how the economic concepts of efficiency provide the foundations for the conomic evaluation of health care technologies; Understand what the cost-effectiveness threshold represents and know how it might be estimated; Use appropriate decision rules in cost benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis, including an understanding of the importance of incremental ratios, extended dominance, net health benefits; Explain and discuss the rationale for discounting health benefits and costs in economic evaluation; Explain and discuss the methods problems associated with economic evaluation alongside randomised controlled trials (RCTs); Explain the alternative approaches that have been proposed to handle and to describe the various forms of uncertainty when using individual patient level data from RCTs; Explain the raionale for decision analytic modelling for economic evaluation and describe it's terminology.

Entry requirements

Postgraduate degree: PGCert Health Economics for Health Care Professionals with an average of 56% or more in the Health Economics: Concepts and Analysis and Introduction to Health Care Evaluation modules. Other qualifications and experience: Applicants who have not completed the PGCert Health Economics for Health Care Professionals at York are only able to be admitted in exceptional circumstances.
