Course Summary

This course is your opportunity to further develop as a health and social care professional. Undertake a programme of continued professional development in advanced respiratory practice. You will learn from experts in the field in small postgraduate groups, alongside fellow professionals. This course will enable you to study for either a PG Cert, PG Dip or full MSc, depending on your own requirements.

This is a unique model of continued professional development for allied health professionals. You will learn from industry experts in intimate learning groups. You will gain a postgraduate level award, whether that is a PG Cert, PG Dip full MSc, in your chosen area of Advanced Respiratory Practice. The award you choose will determine the duration of the course, as well as how many modules you will study.

The course is aimed at qualified professionals working in UK health and social care, such as physiotherapists or occupational therapists, seeking to develop advanced practice in a specific clinical area.

The award pathways have different expected learning outcomes. Each one advances the previous award. To complete your chosen award, you will:

PG Cert

  • Evaluate and apply current evidence on the management of complex patient care strategies
  • Demonstrate comprehensive leadership skills to support and encourage the development of others.

  • Develop high levels of effective communication appropriate to patients in health coaching and health literacy, and to key stakeholders in leadership and change management
  • Demonstrate comprehensive leadership skills to support and encourage service development.

Full MSc

  • Select, justify and implement a methodology appropriate to the research question or aim
  • Follow research ethics principles to conduct the research ethically
  • Present research findings in a recognised journal format for manuscript submission.

Modules

Due to the unique design of the PG Cert Advanced Respiratory Practice, this single module will constitute your entire degree. The Health Education England framework has characterised the main components of multi-professional advanced practice with 4 key pillars:

  • Clinical practice
  • Leadership and management
  • Education
  • Research

You will complete the course with the necessary skills, evidence and competencies outlined by the 4 pillars. You will be assessed through a presentation and reflective portfolio. You will also be assessed on a pass/fail basis on the application of documented skills in a practical setting, by a mentor. You will reflect on 5 case studies encountered within the clinical setting. This should include both complex clinical case studies and evidence of the application of leadership skills.
