Course Summary

This course aims to provide an understanding of the many challenges faced by the oil, gas and energy industry. We focus on the interpretation, evaluation and communication of legal issues which may arise in a wide range of circumstances, including risk management, international business, the environmental impacts of the energy industry and corporate social responsibility. In an ever-evolving society with increasing environmental awareness, the energy industry is under increased scrutiny and growing pressure to adapt, developing new solutions and cleaner fuels. The course will be assessed through a combination of formative and summative assignments.

On successful completion, you should be able to: demonstrate a sound understanding of: the role and rules of law in the oil, gas and energy industries; the emerging legal principles and concepts as they apply to the oil, gas and energy industries; the international context within which the law operates; research techniques and sources of law used to investigate and analyse the law relating to oil, gas and energy; and critically evaluate legal and other materials in the presentation of oral and written arguments, including the acquisition of advanced citation and referencing skills.
