This exciting new master’s is unusual in the UK for its specific focus on the scientific underpinning and application of coaching in youth. This course aims to foster an evidence-based approach, connecting the science of sport and exercise to the coaching process in youth populations. We cover aspects related to youth coaching, including profiling and strength and conditioning for children and adolescents, the development of motor skills, the fundamentals of youth coaching, critical issues in youth coaching research, research skills, professional practice and global professional development. Within these areas, the science of physiology, psychology, and biomechanical factors influencing youth performance will be applied. This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module.

On successful completion of this course, you should developed: a critical understanding of research, its significance and contribution to present and future developments in sports and exercise science and its application to children and adolescent development; a professional profile relevant to their degree subject (Science of Youth Coaching and Development), reflecting their graduate status and recognising/taking account of the employment arena; a critical understanding of community engagement in physical activity and lifelong participation sport and exercise.

Entry requirements

Students need an honours degree in Sports and Exercise Science or a related discipline (e.g. Sports Studies, Sports and Exercise Psychology, Sports Therapy, Sports Coaching, Exercise Science, Physical Education) and students will normally have achieved a lower second class (2.ii) classification or above; 2. or equivalent appropriate qualification that includes cognate areas that overlap with sport and exercise science.
