Health Psychology MSc/PG Dip/PG Cert

DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY
Overall Rating

Basically, DMU is great. Really friendly, great place and great people. Course wise, do anything but the MSc Health Psychology. You'll save a year and your self worth, and a tonne worth of money.

Student Union

The Student Union is great, super inclusive and friendly.

Uni Facilities

Great. Constantly adding new things to the campus.

Course and Lecturers

If you're planning Health Psychology, definitely don't do it at DMU. They're a very rigid department, that are extremely unorganized. The assignments are irrelevant to any of the topics covered - just systematic reviews or critical evaluations with extremely vague guidelines. Modules are taught only because it's a faculty's specialty, but very minimal is taught in terms of skills or knowledge pertinent to Health Psychology. They only teach you things they supposedly have expertise in. Granted Health Psychology is an emerging field, but it doesn't mean that faculty too have no clue on what the field is or what future prospects are.

The faculty is mismanaged, often delaying marking, giving next to no feedback. Since the guidelines are vague, you can get a 75 on one assignment and a 58 on a similar assignment with absolutely no justification. They're also extremely unapproachable - the maximum they'll do is signpost you to the library.

City Life

It's a pretty dead city, but everything is within walking distance and the food is great!

Job Prospects

Absolutely none. De Montfort University is great, but the MSc Health Psychology department is absolutely awful. They advertise a mandatory placement for during the course that turns out to be four days, out of which one day is a briefing and the last day is feedback, so technically two days. And if you actually express your feedback with your concerns, they conveniently mark you down for your opinion. The placement itself is absolutely irrelevant and they place you with other teams that have no use of a health psychologist so really, you're prepped for nothing by the time you do your 'week long' placement.

Student Support

The tutors aren't great tbh. They literally offer no assistance when you need it, and when they say they'll reply between 3-5 days, they mean it. Appointments are available but the tutors are quite...unfriendly. They'll hear you out but won't do anything about it.
