De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is a university with a rich heritage, providing students with high-class further education options for over 150 years.
DMU offers the perfect combination of modern facilities, a supportive academic community and high-quality teaching, with continual input from leading employers and professional bodies underpinning its academic expertise.
DMU is rated a 5-star ‘excellent’ institution by QS, a world leader in evaluating higher education performance. DMU joins 15 other universities in the UK and just over 100 universities worldwide in being granted the 5-star accolade.
Postgraduate courses are career-focused, with industry insight through virtual and in-person employer talks, insight visits, placements (availability dependent on course). There’s lifelong support, too, through DMU’s global alumni community, DMU for Life.
Postgraduate
There are various postgraduate courses available for study at DMU, with postgraduate students catered for through postgraduate-specific digital and on-campus events. Students will need to source their own private accommodation, although DMU can help by putting students in touch with a recommended letting agent.
DMU for Life and the Global Alumni Community Hub are services offered to postgraduate students beyond graduation, as well as careers guidance when they need it. As a result, students can be confident in a lifetime of professional and academic success well beyond their time at the university.
Students at DMU are encouraged to get involved and help to shape their own education, as well as help to shape the curriculum for students who will follow in future years.
Many of DMU’s postgraduate courses benefit from a block approach to teaching, called Education 2030, which provides a good study-life balance. Thanks to a straightforward structure and timetable, students get to study one module at a time. This way they can focus on a topic for several weeks with the same classmates and tutor, which creates a strong sense of community with ongoing assessment rather than final exams.
Alongside their course, students are also encouraged to enrol in the university’s mentoring and peer mentoring schemes, allowing students to hone their own skills while working with other students for the betterment of the university as a whole.
Master’s degrees take one year to complete, or two years if students prefer to study part-time. Students are trained on how to carry out effective research before being assigned a project.
Anyone who takes the MPhil or PhD route will be assigned supervisors that are existing experts in their respective fields. MPhils will take 1-2 years for full-time study, or up to 4 if part-time. PhDs are no light undertaking, as students can expect to spend 3-4 years full-time on their research, or up to 6 years part-time.
To study for a master’s degree, postgraduate diploma or certificate, applicants will normally hold an undergraduate law degree at 2:2 or above (or equivalent). They may also be considered if they have relevant industry or professional experience, so students should apply if they feel they are deserving of a place. Courses are delivered in English, so there is a minimum English language proficiency requirement which students must meet before starting their course.
There are many alternative pathways to enrolment; the university considers each application on its individual merits. Prospective students are encouraged to consult the De Montfort University admissions department, who are available all year round to answer any questions related to the application process.
For PhDs, a master’s degree in a relevant discipline is an advantage, although not always a necessity. Students can find the latest entry requirements for their course of interest by visiting DMU’s website, and are advised to familiarise themselves with any key dates and deadlines.

De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) is an independent organisation led by students that is available to ensure that students have a representative voice at the university. Based centrally on campus, the SU is available to any students who need advice or guidance.
DSU also co-ordinates over 120 societies, volunteering groups and the award-winning Demon Media, all of which give students a chance to be involved with something amazing.

City life
Leicester is a great place to be a student, offering a safe space to live and study as well as convenient access to accommodation, shopping, nightlife and the city centre. Leicester has been named the fourth most vibrant city in the UK, putting it ahead of the likes of Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds and London (Top Cities Vibrancy Report, 2022).
The university recommends Sulets, a letting agency run by the students’ union of DMU alongside the University of Leicester. The agency does not charge students for its services and has a wide range of rented accommodation options available to postgraduate students.
Facilities
DMU offers all the essential university facilities on one central campus, while benefiting from its city centre location for other student essentials as well.
The main Kimberlin Library offers a huge range of online resources, all of which can be remotely accessed anytime, anywhere. The library is home to a range of study spaces as well as specialist computer facilities and is run by dedicated staff who offer additional support to students.
In the Hugh Aston Building, trading terminals give students access to the same information as leaders in business, finance and government.
DMU’s media studios are equipped with industry-level video, audio and radio production suites and recording studios. Engineering students make use of an energy laboratory, where DMU research helped EU businesses hit energy efficiency targets. Performance students learn in specialist studios for dance and performance with sprung floors and dedicated rehearsal areas.
Coming to university is a chance to meet new people, have lots of new opportunities, achieve academic goals and work towards a career.
DMU works hard to ensure that all students have a positive experience at university. It is important that students feel they’re able to ask for advice and support as early as possible to reduce any impact on their mental health.
The university’s Healthy DMU initiative provides resources to help students to have a healthy, happy and productive time, developing lifestyle habits that can enrich their well-being for years to come.
DMU’s disability advice and support team offers services tailored to the specific needs of students with physical and sensory disabilities, medical conditions and learning differences.
The university’s mental health inclusion team and wellbeing team are there to guide students towards the many support services available, in person and online, and from day one students are encouraged to ask for help with any issues concerning mental health.
The institution also has a dedicated international student support team to offer general information about living and studying in Leicester, as well as help students meet others from their home country.
There are a number of tuition fee discounts and country-specific scholarships for students who wish to study a postgraduate course at De Montfort University, and students can find out more about their options on the university’s website.

MAs and MSc courses generally follow the structure of core modules and elective modules which are supported by a final project or dissertation. They are led by the university’s expert staff and include seminars and, for some courses, lectures.
A postgraduate diploma is similar to a master’s degree, but usually does not include a final project or dissertation. A postgraduate certificate is another option that usually takes less time to complete.
Research
DMU has a track record of research that impacts society and makes a real difference to people’s lives through improvements to health and well-being, infrastructure, creativity, economic growth, business and civil society.
As the United Nations' (UN) designated Global Hub for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 – the only UK university to be designated as such – DMU believes that it has a commitment to address the UN SDGs through its research, teaching and enterprise activity.
Distance learning
DMU has a history of providing distance learning qualifications within a range of programmes to choose from. The university’s diverse community consists of students located in over 85 countries, and it is continuing to develop more programmes.
Distance learning allows students to fit their learning in around their lifestyle and other commitments while achieving the same qualifications as they would by doing traditional campus-based study.
