Criminology PhD

Overall Rating

The experience as a PhD student has been largely positive. Academically, I have had lots of support and guidance from my supervisory team, have engaged with a number of research development courses, and have been given plenty opportunities for both teaching and research employment.

Socially, there is a huge range of societies and sports clubs and some teams that are specific to Graduate College. The amenities on campus mean that when living on campus, there wasn't much need to travel to the city centre. Living off campus, there was enough accomodation options and good transport links between the city centre and campus.

Student Union

The Students' Union helps to run the many societies and sports clubs, has a nightclub in the city centre and has a base on the campus.

Uni Facilities

Course and Lecturers

Most: The faculty provide a wide range of training development course for PhD students.

Least: Lack of resources and lack of community for PhD students in the department.

City Life

A lot of the accommodation is on the campus and there are lots of amenities on the campus including shops, a pharmacy, nine bars, cafes and restaurants, a post office and a bank. There are regular buses to the city centre which takes around 20-30 minutes.

Job Prospects

There is a great careers service that you can book appointments with or attend one of their tailored workshops such as CV writing. There is a careers website that advertises job opportunities and internships. The careers service also runs a mentoring scheme that allows you to be mentored by a person working in your industry of interest.

Student Support

Academic support for PhD students largely relies on the support of the supervisory team. Feedback on progress is given in regular appraisal meets.

There is a counselling service on campus that can be accessed through self-referral, and there is a well being team placed within each college.
