Lancaster University is a leading UK higher education institution, having been rated as the 10th best university in the country by the Complete University Guide 2024. It was also ranked 16th in the UK for research quality, reflecting its commitment to impactful research and academic rigour.
Lancaster is home to nine colleges, each offering a range of academic pathways, social connections and accommodation options that come together to form a valuable collegiate university experience.
The university was founded in 1961 and gained its Royal Charter in 1964. Originally offering courses in natural sciences, humanities and business disciplines, the university has since grown and now offers postgraduate study options across a broad range of subjects.
Lancaster University is based out of a 560-acre parkland campus, just three miles from the centre of the city. With an impressive range of facilities including a theatre, art gallery and concert hall, a well-equipped library and a range of dining and drinking options, the Lancaster campus is a hub for activity which also serves the wider community.
Just a short bike or bus journey will allow students to reach the centre of Lancaster, a student city filled with shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as a variety of nightlife after the sun goes down. Students will be able to easily walk around this medium sized city, experiencing hundreds of years of history in one of England’s Heritage Cities.
Lancaster University is home to a large postgraduate student community who can choose between over 180 graduate programmes across dozens of subjects. It offers various taught master’s courses including MSc, MBA and MA courses.
Research degrees are also an option for students considering taking a course at Lancaster University, ranging from MPhils to PhDs and professional doctorates, as well as master’s by research.
Flexible study options are accommodated at Lancaster, with part time study options available for many master’s courses and a range of online courses that can be 100% remote or include some on-campus elements. This allows students to study in a way that suits their lifestyle and career plans.

Students will need to meet the entry requirements for their chosen course before they can enrol on a programme of study at Lancaster University. Entry requirements can vary according to the course and level of study being applied to. Entry requirements for courses at Lancaster include:
MSc Accounting and Financial Management – a UK honours undergraduate degree in subjects like finance, economics or business studies at a 2:1 level or more, or equivalent qualification.
MA Digital Humanities – a UK honours undergraduate degree in history or similar subject at a 2:1 level or more, or international equivalent.
MSc (by research) Plant Sciences – a UK honours undergraduate degree in a related subject at a 2:1 level or more, or international equivalent, or sufficient relevant industry experience.
MA Fine Art – a UK honours undergraduate degree in a subject like fine art or similar, at a 2:1 level.
Entry requirements for a particular course at Lancaster can change over time, so it’s always recommended that applicants check the criteria for their chosen course directly on the university site.
Developing student employability is closely linked with academic training at Lancaster, and the university’s careers service works in closely collaboration with teaching staff. The university also maintains a network of productive partnerships with leading UK graduate employers, as well as international businesses, to provide students with the opportunity to build industry-relevant skills, access work experience opportunities and find employment.
Industry placements and applied research projects are a common part of postgraduate courses at Lancaster, which are combined with taught elements focusing on current challenges and growth areas in students’ chosen fields.
The careers service also offers a regular suite of resources, events and activities for students to access on campus during their studies. This includes an annual careers fair that attracts more than 100 employers, as well as sector specific events and mentoring programmes. Regular workshops and professional development courses ensure students graduate with sought after capabilities and the confidence to succeed.
Lancaster University offers postgraduate students a range of accommodation options for the duration of their studies. Since 2010, its halls have been ranked as the best in the UK eight times by the National Student Housing Awards. The university’s Graduate College has postgraduate-only halls available, along with private or shared flats around the campus. There is also accommodation suitable for couples and families.
Students can choose from ensuite or shared bathroom rooms, shared bathroom townhouses and studio apartments with private facilities.
Lancaster guarantees university-managed accommodation spaces for all postgraduate taught students who apply by the specified deadline prior to their studies starting. Research and short-course students are not guaranteed a place but can still apply to live in university halls.
The university can also help students find and secure private rented accommodation across the city if preferred.
Lancaster is a bustling city in the north-west of England which combines historic architecture with modern amenities and a vibrant city culture. Nestled between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District national parks, a 2020 study named Lancaster as one of the top 20 places to live in the UK.
Postgraduate students can access a wide range of funding to help cover the costs of their studies, with millions of pounds awarded to Lancaster University students each year as scholarships or bursaries. Available funding sources include:
The Lancaster Masters Scholarship, which will discount tuition fees for home fee paying master’s students. The value of the award can range between £2,000 and £12,500 depending on the course being studied.
The Alumni Loyalty Scholarship, which offers a 20% discount on tuition fees for taught master’s students who attain a 1st class degree at bachelor’s or previous master’s level at Lancaster, and a 10% discount for students achieving a 2:1.
The Lancaster Business Masters Scholarship, which offers a £4,000 scholarship towards tuition fees for international students studying a taught postgraduate course at the university’s Management School. A 2:1 undergraduate degree is required to be eligible.
Students will also be able to apply for faculty-specific scholarships, as well as funding for PhD level study which can be accessed through each faculty at the university, as well as a number of Doctoral Training Centres.
