Postgraduate
Taught Masters are available over one or two years to build on undergraduate degrees. Classes are smaller and provide an opportunity for students to build their independent learning skills.
A range of research courses are available including MRes, MPhil and PhD.

Students on a postgraduate degree are actively encouraged to make use of the Students’ Union and its clubs and societies, creating one vibrant learning atmosphere for all.
The university's 130+ programmes are developed and delivered by leading academics whose industry experience enables them to combine real world insight with cutting edge theory. Students can expect a high standard of teaching, which will prepare them to become the experts of tomorrow in their chosen field.
The five faculties offer a diverse mix of courses, including postgraduate opportunities. These are a mix of taught and research courses, both of which have a heavy leaning on independent learning, giving students the freedom to utilise the resources available to them but study in a way that suits them.

Entry requirements vary for each course of study. Students can find the exact requirements for their course on the university’s website, by searching for their chosen field. Broadly, students applying for undergraduate courses must have completed A-Levels or equivalent diplomas, with international students asked to provide high school completion forms.
Postgraduate study is not guaranteed and requires students to apply, demonstrating completion of a relevant undergraduate field of study. Pre-postgrad courses are available for international students, to get them up to speed on the level of education required to transfer into a full postgrad degree.
International students are required to speak English, with a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 and no component lower than 5.5.

LJMU has many areas of particular academic expertise including Sport and Exercise Science, Engineering, Business and Education. All programmes are informed by extensive research and the University performed extremely well in the 2014 REF, more than doubling the volume of its activity rated internationally excellent or above.
Sport and Exercise Science at Liverpool John Moores University is in the top 15 in the world in the new global ranking.
Over 96% (HESA 2018) of LJMU postgraduates are in work or further study six months after graduation. LJMU has close relationships with local, national and international businesses enabling postgraduate students to make useful contacts in their field. Industry experts join academics to deliver business-relevant course content, preparing students for life in the workplace.
The Careers team is split between different Career Zones, located in each faculty. The team has Careers Advisers as well as Employability Advisers, who specialize in helping with subjects around applying for jobs, including writing personal statements and CVs, interview techniques, how to secure work placements, options for postgraduate study and more.
Each school also publishes a Career Planning Guide every year, which students can pick up and use as an extra resource for finding future work.

The Students' Union offers a variety of events, clubs, societies and support open to all LJMU students no matter what their level of study. These include a range of sporting clubs, social groups and those more tailored to academia, helping students to find support and friendships with others who share their interests.
Liverpool John Moores Students’ Union represents all 20,000 students enrolled at the institution. Any students who need extra support, or who feel like they need an intermediary to help them tackle an issue with the main university faculty, can find help at the SU. It also has places to meet up with friends and study together.
Clubs and societies
The Students’ Union runs over 100 clubs and societies for students to explore and join.
These are a mix of academic, social, political, charitable and sporting clubs and societies, which give students a huge range of choice when it comes to enhancing their life at the university. All clubs and societies welcome students of all ages, including postgraduates.
Joining clubs and societies also helps to develop other skills that are useful in future employability, including teamwork, confidence and leadership. Students have the chance to learn more about the clubs during their first weeks, meeting current members, and deciding which ones they wish to join.

City life
Liverpool has something for everyone and, when it comes to welcomes, students can expect the very warmest from the locals here.
This friendly, multi-cultural city boasts a legendary music scene, great football, award-winning architecture and unbeatable nightlife. From the green spaces of Sefton Park to the World Heritage dock areas and the numerous galleries and theatres, there is something for everyone in Liverpool.
Getting around the city is easy – there is a cheap public bus service with many routes. There are also multiple train stations which can take students around the region, including to the coast.

Each year the university sets aside bedrooms for new postgraduates in several of the accommodation options offered to new students. The university’s accommodation options are located right in the city centre, close to all campus facilities. Rooms are modern and well-equipped with internet access as standard.
For those who want to live away from university accommodation, Liverpool Student Homes can help to find private rented accommodation. This may be in private halls of residence, or in shared houses in more residential areas of the city.
Students are advised to speak to the Liverpool Student Homes service to find reputable landlords from which to rent private housing.
Facilities
Thanks to its continuing investment programme, LJMU has first class facilities across all faculties. The new Student Life Building and Sports Centre, for example, opened in 2021 and provides a one stop shop for all student support services.
The sport building incorporates an eight-court sports hall to Sport England specifications, featuring basketball, badminton, five-a-side, volleyball, netball, futsal, handball and two multi-purpose sports halls. There is also a gym over two floors which includes 120 workstations, giving plenty of space for students to relax and exercise.
Student support at Liverpool John Moores University is taken very seriously. There are multiple departments available to offer students support on a wide range of topics.
LJMU’s Student Advice and Wellbeing team can provide advice and guidance on everything from accommodation to money management and support for disabled students. There is also academic support available through a range of study skills workshops.
The Doctoral Academy offers assistance to postgraduate researchers through a comprehensive programme of training, with topics ranging from project planning, information management, personal effectiveness, governance, communicating students’ research and career development.

LJMU awards a range of international scholarships for students enrolling at the university each September. These prestigious awards take the form of partial tuition fee scholarships and are available for outstanding international students applying for undergraduate courses and postgraduate taught programmes. A number of programmes offer scholarships for home students and details of these are available on the individual course pages as well. Many taught programmes at LJMU can be studied full or part-time, enabling students to complete their course over a short period of time or extend their learning duration to allow for work and/or family commitments. Students who choose to study part-time will spread the cost of their tuition over their chosen years of study.
Teaching quality for LJMU’s postgraduate courses is excellent – lecturers are leaders in their field, working with global experts to develop a learning plan that will prepare students to become future leaders. While there is still lecture and contact time, there is also the opportunity for more independent study, giving students the chance to shape their own education.
Research
Research is central to the student experience at LJMU and informs the curriculum at all levels.
The University is a leading research institution, with 96% of its research rated as international quality or better (Research Excellence Framework 2014).
Postgraduate students are able to enroll in a research-based PhD qualification. Research areas including Art and Technology, Brain and Behaviour, Educational Research, Evolutionary Anthropology, Health Research, Literature and Cultural History, Public Health, and Sport and Exercise Science.
PhD scholarships are available to help fund research. These include fully-funded scholarships and fees-only options.
Distance learning
Some LJMU programmes can be studied remotely via distance learning. Not all courses are available in this way, but students can enquire through the LJMU website to find out more. Remote learning takes the form of recorded lectures and videos, email and video-conference tutor sessions, and the chance to access the vast digital study resources that the university has to offer.
Students who prefer distance learning can study part-time too, making it easier to fit their chosen qualification around their home life and other commitments which may limit them from attending the university in person.
