Course Summary

The Sport and Exercise Nutrition MSc provides you with an opportunity to gain an in depth understanding of the nutritional and metabolic demands of exercise, of the interactions between diet, exercise and health and how nutrition influences performance in sport. Nutrition is increasingly recognised as being a key component in the optimisation of sport and exercise performance, with both the science and practice of sports nutrition developing rapidly. At Loughborough University you will benefit from studying at one of the UK's leading centres for elite sport, coaching and sport science research.

In recent years graduates from this programme have gone on to jobs including: PhD research roles here at Loughborough University, as well as at a number of other institutions (i.e. the University of Bath, the University of Exeter, the University of Aberdeen, Manchester Metropolitan University, Leeds Beckett University, and Oxford Brookes University etc.); Research Assistant Roles at Loughborough University and the University of Cambridge; Applied athlete support with the English Institute of Sport, US Soccer, Loughborough Sport, as well as numerous other professional and amateur sports teams/ athletes; A variety of roles in the nutrition and fitness industry, working for companies including: GlaxoSmithKline, Volac International, United Biscuits, MyProtein, Opalbond, Boots UK.

On successful completion of our Sport and Exercise Nutrition MSc programme, you should be able to: Manage personal learning efficiently and effectively; Develop and utilise qualitative and quantitative research skills; Work confidently both as an individual and as part of a small team; Work independently and use available support strategically and effectively; Present research concept and evidence using effective communication methods.

This module comes under semester 1. It covers the physiology of body systems underpinning the capacity for exercise, the physiological basis of interventions to enhance endurance performance, and the basis of fatigue and determinants of performance in such events.

Entry requirements

Students need to have an honours degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent overseas qualification in nutrition, dietetics, physiology, sports science with a strong biological sciences component, or a related subject.
